Homeopathy was discovered by Samuel Hahnemann a German medical doctor. Disillusioned by mainstream medicine because it caused so much harm (for example bloodletting and the widespread use of arsenic in its pure form) he gave it away. Being a linguist he took up translating books in order to feed his family. An enquiring mind never lies dormant and on translating a medical book he questioned the rationale put forward by the author and did his own testing. In this he discovered that if a substance can cause a symptom, then it can cure it. Thus the practice of Homeopathy was born as Hahnemann wrote Simila similibus curentur -Like cures like-
An example of like cures like If drinking too much coffee keeps you awake or makes you feel agitated - you may be prescribed the homeopathic remedy made from coffee called coffea. Remedies are made through the process of dilution and shaking, called succession. It is understood that the more a substance is diluted in this way, the greater its power to treat symptoms. The remedies have none of the original substance left in them. It is the vibration of that original substance that remains. In homeopathy you are only given enough of the remedy to stimulate your body to healing.
